“Hey, wake up”. Ethan opened his eyes to see a girl leaning over him. She was pale with short black hair that curled upwards just before it reached her shoulders. She was wearing a tight-fitting blue t-shirt and white jeans. She smiled down at him, and he smiled back up at her. Her name was Katya, and she was his friend. Every day was like this. The feeling the smoke gave him would lull him to sleep the night before, and the next thing he knew he was opening his eyes to her face above him. There were never any dreams in between. He couldn’t remember the last time he had dreamt, and he had seriously begun wondering if that was healthy. “Come on”, she said, “It’s time to get up. You have to do the thing right, or else I won’t be able to be with you today.” This is what finally roused Ethan. Katya was right, certain things had to be done before school started, or else today would be one of the bad days. He had tried going without them before, tried skipping
Running. Running. But my legs aren’t moving.
I conjure swords and I fight. I swing but find nothing.

I knew that before I met you.
Liar.
Does it matter? I know now.
You figured it out with my help. You

He looked over his shoulder and tried to see his pursuers, they hadn't been there when he had escaped but they definitely were going to catch up soon. The rain though, obscured anything beyond 30 feet and he couldn't see anyone, nevertheless.
He dove into an alleyway, swung up onto the fire escape, and began to climb
